In the opening pages of Genesis, God brings order from chaos, creating a world where life can flourish. But as the story continues, humanity turns away from God. Violence and corruption spread throughout creation (Genesis 6:5–12).

The world God called good is unraveling.

In the account of Noah, the waters return, covering the earth. What God had ordered in creation is undone. The flood becomes a picture of judgment, sometimes described as de-creation.

Yet, even in judgment, God provides a way of rescue.

God remembers Noah and his family. Through the waters of the flood, they are preserved, and as the waters recede, a renewed creation emerges. God blesses Noah with words that echo the beginning: "Be fruitful and increase in number" (Genesis 9:1).

Centuries later, Peter connects this rescue to Christian baptism. He writes that Noah's family was "saved through water" and that baptism now saves us "by the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:20–21).

Baptism is not simply about water. It is about God's saving work through Jesus.

The God who rescued Noah through the waters continues his work of rescue through Jesus today.
