The Bible begins with a picture of a world waiting to be formed. The earth is formless and empty, darkness covers the deep, and the Spirit of God hovers over the waters (Genesis 1:2).

Then God speaks.

Light breaks through the darkness. The waters are separated, dry ground appears, and a place where life can flourish begins to take shape. What was formless and empty becomes an ordered creation, designed to support life.

Throughout Scripture, water appears at significant moments in God's story. Noah and his family are carried through the flood. Israel passes through the Red Sea. A new generation crosses the Jordan into the promised land.

Water marks a turning point as God brings his people toward a new beginning.

These accounts help us recognize a larger biblical story that gives meaning to Christian baptism. Paul writes, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV).

Baptism connects us to Messiah Jesus, through whom God brings new life.

The God who brought life out of the waters of creation is still making all things new. This includes you and me.
